8/13/2023 0 Comments Macro tracking app![]() It’s worth bearing in mind that calorie counting isn’t an exact science - the nutritional information on food labels and restaurant meals aren’t always accurate, and our body uses more energy just digesting certain foods (protein requires the most, followed by carbs, and fat) - but if you take everything with a pinch of salt, calorie-counting can be an extremely effective way to ensure you’re on the right track. ![]() If you’re someone who loves planning or numbers, you may find a sense of satisfaction in counting calories - at the end of the day, it’s science: If you can eat a certain amount of food every day, and do so pretty consistently (yes, that means tracking your kids’ crusts and those licks of peanut butter), you will lose weight, and there’s some comfort in knowing the formula will work if you can stick to it. This 2019 study by Brown University, for example, found that people who monitored their food intake better lost more weight. What gets measured gets improved Click To TweetĪnd research supports this for weight loss. No one wants to be scanning barcodes in a calorie counting app and weighing every ingredient for the rest of their lives, after all.īut calorie or macro-counting is a tool you can always come back to, whether you decide you want to lose a little weight again, fuel your fitness better, track your intake of a certain nutrient like fibre or protein, or focus on building muscle by eating in a calorie surplus.Īs the saying goes: What gets measured gets improved. But learning about the energy density of different foods can teach you about healthy portion sizes and give you the knowledge you need to maintain weight loss without tracking afterwards. In fact, doing so isn’t for everyone, and for some can lead to over-restriction, obsession and an unhealthy relationship with food.įor those who can maintain a balanced approach, however, counting calories can be an incredibly useful method for achieving your fitness goals, as well as a fascinating educational tool.Ĭounting calories shouldn’t be forever. While you do need to be in a calorie deficit to lose fat, you don’t necessarily need to count calories. Read on to find out whether Nutracheck or MyFitnessPal is the best calorie counting app and which would best help you achieve your fitness and fat loss goals. ![]() ![]() It’s often the first calorie-counting app people try - so I was intrigued to download Nutracheck and see how it compares.Ī month later, I found myself pleasantly surprised by Nutracheck. Having used MyFitnessPal on and off for over a decade, I know the app really well. ![]() To help you make that decision, I’ve used both apps and reviewed them for ease of use and practicality, health guidance, cost, extra features, and more. Two of the biggest players in the field are MyFitnessPal and Nutracheck, but it might be that one of the two suits you better than the other, so choosing the right app for you could be the key to your fat loss success. Tracking your food intake by counting calories or macros (AKA macronutrients, which are protein, carbs, and fat) can be a really helpful way to ensure you’re in a calorie deficit (essential if you're trying to lose weight) - or surplus or at maintenance, depending on your goal - and a calorie counting app is a handy way to do that. ![]() 8/13/2023 0 Comments Budgetbyte![]() Overall, though, I found Budget Bytes to be a good read. The book has a lot of versatility for cooking on any budget. These tips are a great addition to the book, whether they were cheaper substitutions or ways to keep extra ingredients longer. The author did include tips on saving money with each recipe. Budget conscious suggestions for this style of cooking is greatly needed. Gluten-free cooking, for example, can be very costly. The book would be improved by listing cost effective solutions for those on special diets. In fact, I did not see many substitutions for other dietary needs. But I was disappointed to find no recipes for gluten-free substitutions. There are substitutions listed for vegetarian cooking. One thing the book promised were substitutions for those with various dietary needs. The recipes are varied enough to appeal to a variety of palates. There is Monkey Bread and Peach Bubble Cake recipes in the dessert section. Some of the recipes in the book include Zucchini-Pasta Bake, Hearty Vegetable and Barley Soup, and Ginger Beef 'n' Broccoli. The author provides meal plans at the back of the book for those needing a little help with meal planning. I liked that each section offered a range of meals from inexpensive to splurges. The book is laid out very nicely with clearly defined sections for breakfast, meats, pasta, vegetables, desserts, and more. It provides convenient and healthy meals as well. Freezing extra food saves a lot of money. The author gives good advice on what foods freeze well. I really liked the section on freezing food. The recipes range from less than one dollar a meal to costlier ones reserved for splurges. Each recipe comes with a dollar sign denoting how it falls on the cost scale. Currently practising for an upcoming international dance competition in Mumbai, the two are as confident as the time they began. So we thought we could train quietly at a school in my neighborhood," says Rohit. Of course they took permission from the school principal who allowed them to do that "Even though you can perform this dance in public spaces and open parks, we were often chased by the police who thought we were making a ruckus. Sunny even helped the workshop organisers find unusual places, like an empty classroom in the nearby Municipal school, where they could practice for free. At the workshop in 2010, he met Sunny and the two boys really hit it off. He would practice the stunts he saw other break dancers performing online and recreate them at Navratri and Ganpati festivals. "When I first saw B-boying, I really liked the stunts," says Rohit, 21, who lives at Khargar. They weren't even athletes either, yet the vividly stylish dance attracted them. They really liked what they saw and signed up regardless of not having any dance experience. They got to know about B-boying through television and social networking websites. Rohit Gaekwad aka B-boy Lil Rohn and Sunny Thapa aka B-boy Fonkey Monkey The two youngsters took to break dancing and B-boying as 19-year-olds around the same time. For now, he works hard and practices at home and at other spots in Navi Mumbai. He even ekes out a decent living from the craft and is quite positive about his prospects as a dancer in the future. He doesn't work at the tea stall anymore, but conducts classes instead at Vashi and Ghansoli where he teaches B-boying to other youngsters. They took him on and today Sonu is a teacher himself. In the B-boying scene, the guys are always open to teaching newbies the moves and educating them about the dance. It looked amazing," says Sonu, who continued watching the guys for a few days before he could gather the courage to ask them to teach him the moves too. "I was really impressed with all the stunts they were doing-handstands, cartwheels. Eighteen at the time, Sonu went and stood there initially, too timid to ask them just what they were doing.
